Reflection 1
In my first week of pursuing a community service position I have found the most beneficial position to help me give back to the community while also acquiring information for my issue project. I chose to get involved with the newspapers on ASU campus to see if the influence of a party school is partially due to the newspapers provided on campus. I have contacted them to see where my help is needed but I have not received a call back yet. I will call them again next week.
Also I have read chapter 1 and it has opened my mind to a new way of thinking about reading. I have always known that each word makes a difference but I didn’t understand how particular it really can be. The most important piece of information from the book Developing Critical Reading Skills on page 10, “vocabulary could possibly be the single most important skill associated with good reading”. Also this first chapter puts emphasis on the importance of suffixes and paraphrasing.
Doing the critical context clues on the books website was also a great practice for vocabulary. I had to look up many words in the dictionary but I did guess first on the definition using the tips from chapter 1 of Developing Critical Reading Skills.
