Context Clues 1- 9/1/11
Questions missed 1,4,5
Question 1 used the word surpassed which means to go beyond. I chose to use defeated because the words used before surpassed provided clues that Islam could have either been defeated by other religions of the time or Islam could have surpassed. The better hit was to look at the meaning of the few sentences before the word to understand that the meaning was actually in favor of Islam.
Question 4 was close in definitions as well as question one. I chose teachings as the definition of aspirations because I knew aspirations are thoughts or beliefs. The answer is goals because we are talking about an entire religion that doesn’t have thoughts but goals of its followers.
Question 5 was to define bequeathed in the text and I chose passed or handed down while the correct answer was emphasized, stressed. Bequeath is describing words spoken from generations of Muslims which tells me it used in the emphasis form and not towards an object passed down from generation to generation.
